Research higher degree students play a vital role in shaping the research and applications environment in the QUT Creative Industries Faculty, which is home to over 250 higher degree research students from 15 countries across Europe, the Americas, the Middle East and Asia.
The Faculty's higher degree students benefit from the links with the research centres co-located in the Creative Industries Precinct. Each centre offers scholarships, grand funding schemes, applied research experience and access to experts from around the globe.
Research students draw from a wide number of research strategies to design their studies, ranging from applied commercial research and rigorous academic research to pioneering work in creative practice and performance ethnography. More about practice-led research.
Once a student's research program is confirmed and supervisors appointed, the faculty supports the student through:
- a lively and relevant seminar series
- reading groups
- formal research training modules
- direct financial support, including funding for creative projects, travel, conference presentation and grants-in-aid.
Many of our postgraduate students are employed as tutors and research assistants at QUT and present papers at the annual postgraduate conference. This approach to research serves the interdisciplinary impulses of the creative industries.
All current supervisors have received accreditation and training from the Creative Industries Faculty, which requires they maintain active researcher status and regularly participate in professional development activities in postgraduate education.
Research students receive substantial support to bring their work to fruition. Each on-campus student is provided with access to office space and consumables including photocopying, postage, library searches, telephone, computing and email services. In addition, each student has access to discretionary funds to support conference travel, field trips and thesis production costs. Applicants engaged in creative practice as research, in the first instance, are encouraged to seek external grants to fund these works. They can also apply to the faculty for assistance.
The Creative Industries Faculty also actively supports students to secure external funds or partnerships to support their research. Such external support most commonly comes from grants, sponsorships and partnerships with production houses, galleries and commercial operators.
In addition to these initiatives, support to undertake research activity is available from QUT's Research Students Centre. As well as scholarships, QUT has a Grants In Aid Scheme to support PhD students.
